Romain Bardet and Sophie Wright dominate the Monaco Gravel Race, showcasing their prowess on the challenging alpine terrain. This victory at the UCI Gravel World Series not only highlights their skills but could also shift the dynamics of the season.
Bardet, riding for Factor, finishes the elite men’s race with an impressive lead of over three minutes. He describes the course as "very demanding," making this win his second of the series after taking the title in Castellon, Spain, earlier this year. Paul Voß of Autsaid x Rose Bikes finishes second, 18 seconds ahead of Sascha Weber.
In the elite women’s category, Sophie Wright of Ribble Outliers ends Nicole Frain's recent winning streak. Frain, who previously won three races in a month, starts strong but Wright catches up, eventually crossing the finish line with a staggering gap of nearly eight minutes. Wright expresses her satisfaction with the challenging course, filled with climbs and rocky terrain. Jade Wiel from FDJ United-SUEZ secures third place, nearly 20 minutes behind Wright.
The 116km race features 2,500 meters of elevation gain, starting in Peille and offering breathtaking views of the Mediterranean and Alps. This event significantly impacts the standings as the series progresses.
