Brendan Johnston finishes fourth at Unbound Gravel, celebrating a significant improvement despite the grueling conditions. Here’s why his journey highlights the resilience required in this extreme sport.
Johnston, riding a Giant Revolt prototype, faced what he called one of the toughest editions of the Unbound 200. “Unbound Gravel is never a straightforward race,” he stated, reflecting on the challenging terrain and brutal weather. Known for excelling in long-distance events, Johnston approached this race with the intent of achieving a top result, building on his previous experiences.
In 2023, he struggled in the infamous “peanut butter” mud, which ended his race early. A year later, he improved to 15th despite suffering three punctures. His hard work paid off in 2025 when he claimed fifth place, setting the stage for this year’s performance. Johnston described 2026 as “one better than 2025” while noting that it was a “significantly more savage day out.”
Throughout the race, he encountered various obstacles, but his physical and mental preparation proved vital. As he humorously suggested, “I might have to come back three more times,” indicating his determination to conquer this challenging event in the future.
