Cat Ferguson's hopes at the Giro d'Italia Women are dashed after a crash on stage 1 forces her to withdraw. This incident not only halts her promising start but also raises concerns about her recovery process.

Ferguson, a 20-year-old British cyclist, entered the race with impressive momentum, having recently secured her third victory of 2026 at the Navarra Women’s Elite Classic and finishing on the podium at The Traka 100. Following the crash, her team, Movistar, confirmed that initial medical evaluations ruled out serious injuries. They reported, “Cat will continue to undergo observation and further assessments while additional tests are carried out.”

In a positive update, Movistar later stated that Ferguson is recovering well from her head injury, showing minimal symptoms. She is set to return home for ongoing rehabilitation. Ferguson expressed her gratitude on social media, thanking the medical staff and race organizers for their support. “I’m absolutely gutted to have had to leave the race like this before it even really started,” she said. While she acknowledges the challenges ahead, including following concussion protocols and healing her wrist, Ferguson remains hopeful for a swift return to competitive cycling, wishing her teammates luck for the upcoming stages.
