A major crash disrupts stage 2 of the Giro d'Italia, leading to a neutralization of the race just 20 kilometers from the finish. This incident reveals the dangers of wet conditions and the unpredictable nature of cycling races.
As the riders navigated a left-hand bend on slick roads in Bulgaria, multiple cyclists lost control, resulting in a significant pileup 22 kilometers from the finish line of the stage from Burgas to Veliko Tarnovo. Among those affected were Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates-XRG), Derek Gee-West (Lidl-Trek), Michael Storer (Tudor), Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain Victorious), and Rémi Cavagna (Groupama-FDJ United).
The crash left over a dozen riders on the ground, forcing the race to be neutralized as all available ambulances were dispatched to the scene. Yates emerged with visible injuries, while teammate Jay Vine was stretchered off and subsequently abandoned the race. Ådne Holter (Uno-X Mobility) and Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates) also withdrew due to injuries sustained in the crash.
Racing resumed with 18 kilometers remaining, but the impact of the crash resonates through the peloton as competitors regroup.
