Visma-Lease a Bike's strategic decision to ride at the back of the peloton during the Giro d'Italia opener pays off as Jonas Vingegaard avoids a chaotic crash. This choice keeps the heavy favorite safe amidst the turmoil that unfolded just before the finish line.

Throughout the 147km stage from Nessebar to Burgas, Vingegaard and his team maintained a conservative position, allowing others to push for the sprint. Their foresight was validated when a mass crash involving around a dozen riders occurred in the closing kilometers, triggered by narrow roads and frantic racing.

Visma’s sports director Marc Reef emphasized the importance of safety, particularly with the 5km rule in effect, ensuring that any incident in that zone wouldn’t affect their timing. "We expected something like this," Reef stated, acknowledging the risks associated with the final stretch.

The stage, characterized by flat roads, attracted top sprinters eager for the pink jersey, adding to the tension. While past Giros often featured time trials and challenging finishes, this year’s opener highlighted the need for tactical caution. Vingegaard, relaxed and unharmed post-race, reflects the success of Visma's prudent approach in navigating a dangerous finale.
