Jay Vine confirms he won't pursue a general classification finish at this year's Giro d'Italia, despite the absence of UAE Team Emirates-XRG's original leader, João Almeida. This decision comes after a challenging 2026 season marked by injuries and inconsistent performances.

Vine, a talented climber with four stage wins at the Vuelta a España and a second-place finish in time trials at the UCI Road World Championships, has struggled in Grand Tours. His seven attempts have resulted in three DNFs and a best GC finish of only 30th.

Speaking at the Giro team presentation in Burgas, Vine stated, "I don't think that's something that I'll be doing at this race," emphasizing that Almeida's withdrawal hasn’t altered his role. Adam Yates is expected to lead the team in Almeida's absence.

This season has seen its ups and downs for Vine, who claimed the national time trial title and a GC victory at the Tour Down Under before suffering a fractured scaphoid in a bizarre kangaroo crash. After a brief return at the Volta a Catalunya, another crash forced him back into rehab. As the Giro kicks off in Bulgaria this Friday, Vine focuses on supporting his team rather than individual GC ambitions.
