Kaden Groves exits the Giro d’Italia after succumbing to injuries from a devastating crash on the opening day, leaving Alpecin-Premier Tech reeling. This development shifts the team’s strategy as they lose their key sprinter for the remainder of the race.
Groves abandoned during the early stretches of stage 4, citing ongoing pain from the crash that occurred in Burgas, Bulgaria, where he was one of many riders caught in a chaotic pile-up. Alpecin-Premier Tech confirmed his withdrawal on social media, stating he couldn’t recover sufficiently to continue.
Initially, Groves sustained abrasions to his shoulders, calf, and elbow but managed to compete in stages 2 and 3. However, his return to racing in Italy proved short-lived; he only completed 43 kilometers of the 139-kilometer stage. The stage was critical for sprinters, and Groves had aimed to build on his two previous Giro stage wins.
The crash was triggered by a sudden maneuver from a competitor, leading to widespread chaos just 600 meters from the finish on stage 1. Groves, alongside fellow cyclists Dylan Groenewegen and Matteo Moschetti, struggled to regain form in the ensuing stages, marking a disappointing start to his Giro campaign.
