Ben Turner faces a tough reality after stage 4 of the Giro d'Italia, where his team’s GC priorities overshadowed his potential for victory. Here’s why his decision to assist Egan Bernal could reshape the dynamics of the race.
Turner sprinted to a fourth-place finish in Cosenza, but his efforts were marred by the responsibility of helping Bernal, who surprisingly dropped during a crucial climb. With 44.6km to go, Bernal fell behind after Movistar intensified the pace, leaving Turner and Thymen Arensman to bridge the gap. Turner successfully brought Bernal back to the main group, but at a cost.
When the final sprint began, Turner lacked the energy to compete with Jhonatan Narváez, the stage winner from UAE Team Emirates-XRG. Reflecting on the race, Turner expressed frustration, stating, “It feels like a big disappointment... I had good legs.” He acknowledged that without the obligation to support Bernal, he might have contended for a stage win.
Despite his personal disappointment, Turner remains proud of the team's collective effort and looks forward to the challenges ahead in the Giro. His performance highlights the fine line between individual ambition and team strategy in professional cycling.
