Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney struggles to meet her own expectations during a challenging stage 6 of La Vuelta Femenina. This performance raises questions about her potential podium finish as the competition heats up.
Niewiadoma-Phinney, a favorite for the podium, entered the final category 1 climb to Les Praeres positioned well within a reduced peloton. However, the steep ascent, averaging a punishing 13.5% gradient, proved too much. Despite keeping pace with Anna van der Breggen early on, Niewiadoma-Phinney faltered with less than 3 kilometers to go.
"I exploded early, and then it was just suffering to the finish," she stated, reflecting on her performance. Ultimately, she crossed the line in tenth place, finishing 1:09 behind stage winner Van der Breggen, who dominated the climb. Paula Blasi secured second place, closely following the leader.
After this stage, Niewiadoma-Phinney sits sixth overall, 1:25 off the lead and 44 seconds from the podium spot held by Marion Bunel. Looking ahead, stage 7 features an even tougher climb on L'Angliru, where competitors will face a grueling test of endurance and mental fortitude.
