Lennert van Eetvelt's Giro d'Italia hopes come crashing down after a serious accident during stage 11. This setback highlights the fragility of Lotto-Intermarché's campaign, now reduced to just four riders.

Van Eetvelt entered the prestigious race with ambitions for multiple stage victories, showcasing his talent early on by keeping pace with Jonas Vingegaard in stage 2. But the promise of stage 11 quickly turned grim. Approximately 40 kilometers from the finish in Chiavari, Van Eetvelt lost control during a descent, resulting in a heavy crash alongside Filippo Zana and Christian Scaroni.

While Scaroni managed to finish strong, Van Eetvelt struggled to recover, ending the stage in 50th place. Post-race medical evaluations revealed he suffered abrasions and a broken finger, effectively ending his Giro d'Italia aspirations for the season.

With Van Eetvelt's exit, Lotto-Intermarché now faces a daunting challenge, fielding only four riders in the upcoming stage 12. This follows the earlier withdrawals of sprint contender Arnaud de Lie and Milan Menten due to illness, along with Joshua Giddings, who also crashed out. The team is significantly weakened, impacting their competitiveness in the remaining stages.
