Marlen Reusser, the Dwars door Vlaanderen winner, advocates for mandatory GPS trackers in cycling after a harrowing experience of being lost for over an hour following a crash. This comes in the wake of the tragic death of Muriel Furrer at the 2024 UCI Road World Championships in Zurich. An investigation revealed Furrer, just 18, lay undiscovered for 82 minutes after her crash during the junior road race. While the inquiry concluded there was no "criminally relevant breach of duty" by race organizers or the UCI, it ignited discussions on safety measures.
Reusser emphasizes the need for tracking technology, highlighting recent incidents, including Tom Pidcock's crash into a ravine at the Volta a Catalunya. Pidcock was fortunate to communicate via his radio, alerting officials to his location.
The cycling community in Switzerland, including events like Tour de Suisse and Tour de Romandie, is actively addressing these safety concerns. Reusser states, "There is a lot of awareness, and I am really happy that this is going forward." As the push for GPS trackers gains traction, the safety of cyclists remains a top priority in the sport.
