Melisa Rollins suffers a broken left elbow and wrist in a freak accident, forcing her to withdraw from the Absa Cape Epic. The top-ranked U.S. duo, Rollins and teammate Kate Courtney, were set to compete this Saturday but will now miss the eight-day mountain bike stage race. Rollins shares her devastating news on social media after receiving treatment in a Stellenbosch hospital. “I won’t be making it to the start line for Cape Epic this week. To say I’m gutted doesn’t even really scratch the surface,” she posts. The duo trained in South Africa for weeks, aiming to build on their successes at the Leadville 100. Rollins heads back to Utah for surgery and further tests on her wrist. Last year, she faced a similar setback with a broken wrist at the Otway Odyssey but returned to racing just six weeks later.
