Kiaan Watts of the NSN Development Team is disqualified and suspended after punching Marijn Maas from BEAT CC p/b Saxo during the Salverda Bouw Ster van Zwolle race. The incident, captured on video, occurred with 33 kilometers remaining in the race. Watts hit Maas in the head and was seen gesturing aggressively afterward. Fortunately, Maas remained upright and uninjured.
The race officials promptly disqualified Watts, and he is set to face additional disciplinary measures from the UCI. The NSN Development Team has withdrawn him from the upcoming Dorpenomloop Rucphen race in the Netherlands to allow him time to reflect on his actions. The team expressed regret over the incident and extended apologies to Maas, the BEAT CC p/b Saxo team, and race organizers. Watts, 24, has been part of NSN Development for three years and recently competed with the WorldTour squad.
