The Vuelta a España could kick off its 2028 edition from Sardinia, with the island reportedly ready to invest €7.5 million for the opportunity. This potential Grand Depart would mark Sardinia's second time hosting the event in four years.

Local media, including L'Unione Sarda, reveal that the Regional Council is negotiating the funding, proposing a split of €4 million in 2027 and €3.5 million in 2028. Sardinia's rich cycling heritage includes hosting the Giro d'Italia, most recently in 2017, and its own stage race, the Giro di Sardegna. The island is notable as the birthplace of Fabio Aru, the last Italian rider to win the Vuelta, achieving this in 2015.

The Vuelta has expanded its international presence since its first foreign Grand Depart in Lisbon in 1997, with subsequent starts in cities like Nimes and Turin. The 2024 edition will also commence in Lisbon, while the upcoming event in 2023 starts in Monaco.

Should Sardinia secure the Grand Depart for 2028, it would be the island's first Grand Tour start in over a decade, highlighting its potential as a significant player in the cycling world.
