Geraint Thomas emphasizes that Netcompany-Ineos is focused on the "bigger picture" despite recent frustrations voiced by co-leader Kévin Vauquelin after the team time trial at the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Here’s why this moment could strengthen team unity moving forward.
Netcompany-Ineos secured second place in the stage 3 TTT, but the result felt bittersweet. A dropped chain from Oscar Onley, just 9 kilometers from the finish, forced the team to wait for him, impacting their chances for victory. Vauquelin, who missed the yellow jersey by just 12 seconds, expressed his dissatisfaction with the strategy, stating, "I don't think that would have been my strategy."
In response, Thomas highlighted the importance of overcoming challenges as a team. He stated, "It’s good these things go wrong now...and have confidence in each other." He acknowledged that ups and downs are part of the journey, which ultimately brings the team closer together.
Despite the setback, Thomas noted that they remain strong contenders, sitting second and third in the general classification. He underscored that success in this race will be determined in the mountains, where every second counts. The focus remains on their ultimate goal: winning the Tour de France.
