Tim Wellens makes a triumphant return to racing after recovering from a broken collarbone, just in time for the Ardennes Classics. This comeback could reshape UAE Team Emirates-XRG's strategy in the upcoming races.
Wellens competes again starting Friday at De Brabantse Pijl, where he hopes to regain his form. "I won’t have the best legs but I’ll do my best to work for the team," he states, acknowledging the long road to recovery. He spent three weeks off the bike, losing valuable condition, but is eager to don his national jersey in Belgium, particularly after his victory in this race back in 2018.
His return is crucial, especially with Tadej Pogačar missing key domestiques due to injuries. Wellens's presence boosts the team as they prepare for the Amstel Gold Race this Sunday. Pogačar, the reigning World Champion, will focus on Liège-Bastogne-Liège instead, making Wellens's role even more pivotal in their quest for success in the Ardennes.
Wellens teams up with former winner Benoît Cosnefroy and a strong lineup, including Filippo Baroncini and Mikkel Bjerg. His experience and determination will be vital for UAE Team Emirates-XRG as they navigate this challenging season.
