Lorena Wiebes dominates the Marly Grav Race with a powerful sprint, while Wout van Aert secures a solo victory in the UCI Gravel World Series. Here's why these wins matter for both champions as they look ahead in their seasons.
Wiebes, racing for SD Worx-Protime, thrives amidst a competitive field that includes world champion Florian Vermeersch and Unbound 2023 winner Carolin Schiff. In the final stages, Wiebes breaks away with a small lead group, comprising Nele Laing, Amandine Muller, Ilse Pluimers, and Larissa Hartog. As they approach the finish, Wiebes seizes the moment, unleashing her sprint and crossing the line with ease, leaving Hartog and Pluimers in her wake.
“I felt good,” Wiebes reflects. “It’s fantastic to win in the rainbow jersey in my own backyard.”
Meanwhile, Wout van Aert, riding for Visma-Lease a Bike, showcases his strength in the 150km event, launching a decisive attack 20km from the finish. His solo effort pays off as he conquers the course, marked by three laps that navigate scenic Limburg.
Both victories underscore the athletes' formidable presence in the gravel racing scene, setting the stage for what’s to come.
