Dani Sordo makes his highly anticipated return to World Rally Championship this weekend at Rally Islas Canarias after a 19-month hiatus. Here’s why his comeback could ripple through the rest of the season.

Sordo, a three-time WRC winner, rejoins Hyundai to drive the third factory i20 N, bringing significant experience and ambition. He last competed in a Rally1 car at the 2024 Acropolis Rally Greece, finishing second. Sordo expresses immense excitement about his return, stating, “Honestly, I am really excited to be back in the Rally1 car and with the team at Hyundai.”

Hyundai aims to bounce back after a disappointing performance last year on the smooth asphalt of the Canary Islands, where their best result was fifth place. The team has focused on improving the i20 N, coming close to victory in Croatia just two weeks ago.

The unpredictable WRC season features three different winners in four rounds, with Toyota’s Takamoto Katsuta leading the championship for the first time. As Sordo gears up for this weekend, he targets a podium finish, saying, “My target is to achieve a good set-up with the car and to try to fight for a good result... why not go for the win?” His return could ignite excitement in an already thrilling season.
