A wild day of racing at Burghfield Sailing Club sets the tone for the National 12 season. This unpredictable event showcases the fierce competition and challenging conditions that sailors face this year.
Expect to discover how the shifting winds impacted race strategies and outcomes. The unpredictable weather, from breezy beginnings to dramatic hail, created a thrilling atmosphere on the water.
Teams battled tough conditions, with one boat capsizing early on. Despite the locals' familiarity with the notoriously tricky Burghfield winds, East Coast sailors Tom and Isobel, along with Ian and Alex, claimed the top two spots overall, proving that strategy reigns supreme. Memorable moments unfolded, including a dramatic encounter between national champions Graham and Blue and Jonno and Charlotte, where a close call nearly ended in disaster.
As the hailstorm chased sailors ashore, they enjoyed homemade cakes in the clubhouse, courtesy of the Camms. Prizes from Blood Red Clothing added to the excitement, rewarding both winners and standout performers.
The next challenge awaits at Salcombe Yacht Club from May 2nd to 4th. Sailors are encouraged to bring their boats for another round of competitive racing. The season is off to an exhilarating start!
