Elfyn Evans claims his victory in Rally Japan is "important," yet he acknowledges the uncertainty of its impact on his World Rally Championship title ambitions. This win marks his second of the season, propelling him 20 points ahead of Toyota teammate Takamoto Katsuta with seven rounds remaining.
Evans, who has finished as the runner-up five times in six seasons, understands the significance of maximizing advantages. Last year, he faced disappointment in Japan after losing to reigning champion Sebastien Ogier despite being the leader. This time, he utilized his road position effectively, securing crucial bonus points on Sunday.
However, the challenges ahead loom large. With seven gravel rallies to conclude the season, Evans might find himself at a disadvantage as a road sweeper. He reflects on the need for strategic caution, stating, “I didn’t go perhaps all in as I really should have done, but I felt like I had to secure this win rightly or wrongly.”
