Erica Lush, the American offshore sailor, retires from the 2026 Solitaire du Figaro Paprec during its critical third leg due to significant damage to her mainsail. Here’s why her decision impacts the race and her future ambitions in sailing.

Lush faced intense winds peaking at 43 knots, which tore her mainsail, making repairs impossible at sea. Aiming to be the first American to complete two Solitaires, she had previously finished the 2025 regatta just last September. “I came into this year’s Solitaire comfortable and confident,” Lush stated after reaching the shore in Les Sables d'Olonne, the iconic starting point for the Vendée Globe. The race has seen multiple competitors withdraw due to severe conditions, including frontrunner Tom Dolan.

Despite this setback, Lush remains focused on her long-term goals. She chartered the Beneteau Figaro 3 Hope from renowned sailor Samantha Davies, symbolizing her mission to empower women and American sailors in offshore racing. Lush plans to return home to compete in the 2026 Newport Bermuda Race's Double-Handed Division this month, continuing her journey towards the Vendée Globe, a prestigious solo around-the-world race. Her determination highlights the challenges and triumphs of offshore sailing.
