The Japan Rally kicks off with Elfyn Evans as a solid leader, marking a 17.7-second gap over Oliver Solberg. Here’s why this start impacts the championship battle.
The first stage in Asuke left Oliver Solberg with the best time, but the real test came in Isegami, where Evans showcased his strength. With challenging conditions, the Welshman took advantage of his opening position and excelled, while Takamoto Katsuta, who suffered a puncture, lost 31.5 seconds. Adrien Fourmaux also faced issues, finishing 41 seconds behind.
As the day progressed, Takamoto Katsuta continued to struggle, and his loss of confidence became evident. Oliver Solberg, who had been the fastest up to that point, lost 11.3 seconds due to an unexpected encounter with a deer. Evans, however, maintained his pace and concluded the first loop with another stage in his favor, limiting Sébastien Ogier's losses to just 1.7 seconds.
In the overall standings, Elfyn Evans leads with a time of 37'13"3, closely followed by Solberg and Ogier, ensuring an intense competition for the rest of the rally.
