Mercedes reportedly pulls out of talks to acquire a minority stake in Alpine F1. This decision could reshape the landscape of team ownership in Formula 1.

For months, speculation surrounded Mercedes' potential investment in Alpine, especially as Otro Capital looked to sell its 24 percent stake. With Alpine's reliance on Mercedes technology increasing, the partnership seemed logical. However, a significant valuation gap derailed the discussions. Otro Capital sought around $720 million for its share, valuing Alpine at approximately $3 billion. In contrast, Mercedes viewed the team as worth only $2.2 billion to $2.4 billion, a difference too vast to reconcile.

Sources indicate that talks have ceased, leaving Alpine’s future ownership uncertain. Christian Horner's name briefly emerged in connection with the stake, but those discussions have not progressed. Renault Group remains the majority owner, but the unresolved minority stake situation ensures the ownership story continues.

This withdrawal comes at a critical juncture, coinciding with McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown's warnings against shared ownership structures in F1. Brown is advocating for regulatory measures to prevent multiple-team ownership, highlighting the broader implications of these discussions for the sport's future dynamics. The landscape of Formula 1 ownership remains in flux, with significant questions still unanswered.
