Overy Staithe Sailing Club's annual Sharpie open delivered thrilling competition over the weekend of May 16-17, featuring a fleet of ten boats. Here’s why this event is crucial for the sailing community: it showcases emerging talent and competitive spirit in the Sharpie class.

On Saturday, competitors raced during the evening tide in the lagoon, where Chris Gibbs and Graham White from Wells SC dominated, winning both races. The first race saw a clean sweep for Wells SC, with the Malderijs taking second and Gibbs alongside Charlie Orton in third. In Race 2, Gibbs and White again finished first, followed by Sam Neal and Marcus Flint from Brancaster Staithe SC in second, while the Malderijs secured third.

Sunday's races began at 7 AM, with a light wind that surprisingly strengthened, leading to exhilarating racing. Gibbs and Orton clinched the top spot in Race 3, with the Malderijs in second and Gibbs/White in third. The final race ended with the Malderijs retiring due to a broken jib block, allowing Gibbs/White to secure another victory, followed by Gibbs/Orton and Ben and Paul Goakes from Overy Staithe SC in third.

The next Sharpie meeting is set for Brancaster Staithe SC on June 6-7.
