Giovanni Belgrano, the new Regatta Chairman of the British Classic Yacht Club, is redefining British Classic Week. This year’s event, set for July 20-25 at Cowes Yacht Haven, promises to elevate the classic sailing experience.
Belgrano, a retired high-end race boat composite engineer, brings vast expertise to the role. His own 1939 Laurent Giles sloop, Whooper, boasts five victories at British Classic Week, illustrating his deep connection to this prestigious event. His vision focuses on enhancing participation and quality, particularly as the 25th anniversary approaches in 2027.
Belgrano emphasizes the importance of the ethos: "The BCYC is a club of yachts, not of people." This mindset aims to foster camaraderie among yachts and create a balance between competitive racing and social interaction. Under the guidance of Peter Saxton from the Royal Yacht Squadron, the racing format is tailored to be 'classic-friendly,' accommodating diverse owner preferences.
While European classic yacht events uphold strict originality standards, British Classic Week embraces innovation. Up to one-third of participating yachts are modernized, allowing them to compete in both classic and contemporary races. Belgrano’s Whooper showcases this versatility, having excelled in the RORC's IRC National Championship and at iconic races like the Round the Island Race.
