The scorching temperatures across the UK this weekend led to the hottest May day ever recorded, reaching 34.8 degrees in London. This extreme heatwave transformed beaches into bustling hotspots, putting significant strain on local traffic, particularly around Poole Bay.
Despite the sweltering conditions, the wind didn’t cooperate, leaving the bay flat and forcing race officials to delay several events. The IRC European Championships crowned their champions, with Malcolm Offord's 'Braveheart' claiming victory in IRC 0, while the South Caernarvonshire Yacht Club's 'Impetuous' shone brightly on Sunday. The Love brothers' 'Frank 4' won IRC by a substantial margin, and Sam Laidlaw’s 'Aguila' triumphed with an impressive 23-point lead.
In the VPRS class, Mark Titterington and Hannah Lewis's 'Elevation' dominated VPRS 1, achieving a perfect score. Owain Peters’s 'Rum Juggernaut' excelled in VPRS 2, securing four firsts and two seconds. Sue Browne’s 'Astronomix' clinched the IRC Southern Championship, while Guy Gillon’s 'Khumbu 2' took the Cape 31 class. The J80 National Championship was decided by the narrowest of margins, with Simon Cameron’s 'Intergalactic' edging out Austin Kenny’s 'Ram Jam'.
Megan Pascoe also made waves in the smaller One Design classes, showcasing the competitive spirit
