Hyundai Motorsport is introducing an improved engine at the Rally de Portugal, aiming to close the gap with Toyota, which has won all five events of the 2026 season. This change is crucial for maintaining competitiveness in the World Rally Championship.
The Korean brand has faced challenges in maintaining a consistent pace with its i20 N Rally1. After implementing improvements in the shocks, geometry, and differential interaction in Croatia, a new engine homologation is now being introduced. According to Andrew Wheatley, the sporting director, this adjustment to the intake system aims to recover some of the lost power due to changes in fuel specifications. While it’s not a revolutionary change, it is expected to provide a competitive edge in Portugal.
Hyundai drivers Thierry Neuville and Dani Sordo are showing optimism after the Shakedown, where Neuville topped the standings. However, Neuville remains cautious, acknowledging that the real rally conditions can vary, especially with rain forecasted. This is a key moment for Hyundai, which aspires to get back into the fight for the top positions following a recent defeat in the Canary Islands.
