Historic Halvorsen 36 masthead cutter Solveig, a revered name in Australian sailing, prepares to compete in the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia's Great Veterans Race on May 9. Here’s why Solveig’s presence could redefine the legacy of this iconic event.

Built by the Halvorsen brothers, Solveig made history by securing Line Honours in 1953 and Overall victory in 1954 at the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. Now, more than 70 years later, she remains in exceptional condition and will race in Division 2. The Great Veterans Race features boats launched before 1996, all of which have previously competed in a Sydney Hobart. This year, an impressive 30 entrants are set to participate.

John Whitfield and Annie Lawrence, Solveig's current guardians, have revitalized the yacht since purchasing her in 2019. Whitfield, a seasoned Sydney Hobart veteran, expressed pride in maintaining Solveig’s legacy. The vessel will race against notable competitors, including the Halvorsen 38 Anitra V and the S&S 34 Western Morning.

The event also pays tribute to Gordon Ingate OAM, who recently passed away at 100 years old, honoring his lifelong commitment to sailing. The Great Veterans Race promises to be a memorable celebration of maritime heritage.
