Greenwich Yacht Club's third annual fundraising cruiser race on May 10 sees Loflyer clinch victory, raising over £1,800 for the RNLI Tower Lifeboat Station.
Stay tuned to learn how this community-driven event not only showcased competitive sailing but also provided vital support to lifesaving services along the River Thames.
Fifteen boats participated in the race, navigating to Erith Reach and back under ideal north-east wind conditions. The unique "Start When You Like" format allowed competitors to strategize based on wind and tide, enhancing the tactical nature of the race. Each vessel's position was tracked and displayed on a screen in the clubhouse, creating an engaging experience for spectators.
John Barnard, skipper of Loflyer, accepted the winner's trophy from the Mayor of Greenwich, Councillor Linda Bird. His crew, Timandra Harkness and Sean Collins, celebrated their achievement. The event also featured a raffle with prizes donated by local businesses, boosting fundraising efforts significantly.
With the RNLI Tower Lifeboat Station being the UK's busiest, this support is crucial for safety on the Thames, which is patrolled from Battersea to Woolwich. Greenwich Yacht Club, committed to promoting boating, encourages sponsors to join next year's race in honor of the lifeboat station's 25th Anniversary.
