Matt Wearn claims the ILCA 7 title at the Trofeo Princesa Sofía, marking a powerful return to international sailing. The double Olympic Champion shines in his first major regatta since the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, showcasing his skill in a competitive fleet. Wearn aims for a third consecutive Olympic gold medal, a feat achieved by only one Australian in the same event. “A win is a win,” Wearn states, emphasizing his satisfaction with the result despite the challenges of returning after nearly two years.
Australia’s sailing prowess is evident across multiple classes. In the 49er, Harry Price and Max Paul finish fourth, just off the podium after leading much of the event. “Overall, it feels really positive,” Price reflects on their performance. Paul notes this regatta serves as a stepping stone toward future competitions.
In the Nacra 17, Brin Liddell and Rhiannan Brown secure eighth place, gaining crucial experience in a tough field. The ILCA 6 squad also impresses, with Mara Stransky and Zoe Thomson finishing eighth and ninth, respectively. “We’ve got a lot of promise going forward,” Thomson says. Australian Sailing Team High Performance Director Iain Brambell highlights the regatta as an important benchmark for the season ahead.
