The Houston Astros face a new setback as shortstop Jeremy Pena and pitcher Tatsuya Imai land on the injury list. Here’s why this could derail their season hopes.
Pena suffers from a Grade 1 right hamstring strain, while Imai is dealing with arm fatigue. Pena, batting .256 with five runs this season, experienced knee tightness during Friday’s game against the Seattle Mariners but finished the match. He attempted to play again on Saturday but left early, prompting further medical evaluation. Last season, he made his All-Star debut, posting a .304 average, 17 home runs, 62 RBIs, 20 stolen bases, and an .840 OPS over 125 games.
Imai’s situation is equally concerning; he displayed fatigue after throwing just 37 pitches in his Friday start, managing only one out. The Astros are reeling amid a tough 10-game road trip, where they’ve recorded a dismal 1-8 record leading into Monday’s series finale against the Mariners. The situation worsens as the team also placed right-handers Hunter Brown and Cristian Javier on the injured list last week due to shoulder strains. Starter Cody Bolton exited Sunday’s game in the second inning with mid-back tightness, further straining the Astros' already battered rotation.
