Milwaukee Brewers swap "pocket pancakes" for a new mascot: a sulcata tortoise named Bobby Jr. The quirky mascot stems from manager Pat Murphy’s viral moment last August, where he snuck a pancake from his hoodie during a dugout interview. The team capitalized on the fame, introducing "Murph's Pocket Pancakes" at home games.
On Friday, a rainout against the Kansas City Royals led to an amusing pregame moment. During an interview with Apple’s Tricia Whitaker, Murphy revealed he couldn't show the pocket pancakes and instead unveiled Bobby Jr. He named the tortoise after his friend Bobby Witt and the Royals star Bobby Witt Jr.
Fans quickly informed Whitaker that her "pocket turtle" was indeed a tortoise, capable of living 70 years and weighing 100 pounds. She joked about the challenge of flying home with the reptile. American Airlines confirmed their no reptiles policy, so Bobby Jr. remains in Kansas City.
He enjoys the warmth of the visiting clubhouse's heat lamp while the team searches for a proper home. A playful suggestion from a player hints that if the Brewers win, they keep the "rally tortoise." If they lose, Whitaker hopes to receive Bobby Jr. instead.
