Los Angeles Dodgers closer Edwin Diaz faces a significant setback as he undergoes surgery on Wednesday to remove loose bodies from his right elbow. The team anticipates he will be sidelined for approximately three months.
This development could shift the dynamics within the Dodgers' bullpen for the remainder of the season. Diaz, 32, was placed on the 15-day injured list ahead of the Dodgers' 12-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies. In a related move, Los Angeles recalls left-hander Jake Eder from Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Diaz has struggled this season, recording four saves with a 10.50 ERA and 10 strikeouts. His latest outing against the Rockies raised concerns, as he allowed three runs without recording an out. Manager Dave Roberts noted the urgency for an MRI, which revealed no ligament damage, confirming the issue is limited to loose bodies.
Surgery will be performed at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Los Angeles. The Dodgers now plan to utilize a committee approach for closing games in Diaz's absence, as Roberts expressed confidence in several players to step up. Diaz, a former fan favorite with the New York Mets, joined the Dodgers this offseason on a three-year, $69 million contract, hoping to contribute to a potential championship run.
