Yuki Matsui is out for Japan in the World Baseball Classic due to a left groin strain. The San Diego Padres reliever's availability for the season opener on March 26 against Detroit is uncertain. Matsui continues to throw off flat ground as he recovers, stating, "Once it’s good enough, then I’ll start throwing off the mound." The 30-year-old left-hander holds a 3.86 ERA over 125 appearances since joining the Padres on a $28 million, five-year deal. He is replaced on Japan's roster by left-hander Yumeto Kanemaru of the Chunichi Dragons. Matsui expressed disappointment but remains hopeful for Japan’s success, saying he believes they will reach the round in Miami. Matsui previously excelled in Nippon Professional Baseball with a 2.40 career ERA and 236 saves, making his debut at age 18 and earning five All-Star selections.
