Caleb Williams' trademark attempt for the nickname "Iceman" faces backlash from NBA legend George Gervin. Gervin, a Hall of Famer and four-time scoring champion, expresses surprise over Williams' filing, stating, "I've been the Iceman for 40-something years." Williams earned the nickname during the 2025 season, leading the Chicago Bears to their first playoff win in 15 years.
On March 16, Williams' company filed four trademark applications for "Iceman," covering a range of merchandise. Gervin swiftly counters with two applications on March 20, including "Iceman 44," his iconic jersey number. Trademark attorney Josh Gerben outlines potential complications, noting that while Williams filed first, Gervin has been using the name longer. A decision from the USPTO is expected in a few months, with Gervin planning to oppose if Williams’ application is approved. The situation is further complicated by Chuck Liddell’s pending trademark for "Chuck 'The Iceman' Liddell.
