The NBA unveils three bold anti-tanking proposals to its board of governors in New York. Each aims to involve playoff teams in the draft lottery.
Proposal one includes 18 teams: the 10 that miss the play-in and the eight that qualify. Each of the bottom 10 has an equal 8% chance to move up, with the remaining odds distributed among the play-in teams.
Proposal two expands the pool to 22 teams, incorporating the four first-round playoff losers, ranked by their two-season records. Teams must hit minimum win totals to qualify for the lottery.
Proposal three features a "5 by 5" format, where the bottom 10 and eight play-in teams enter the lottery. The five worst teams share equal odds for the top picks, with protections to prevent drastic falls in draft positioning.
Owners will discuss these concepts in depth over the coming weeks.
