NFL : Chiefs Acquire Justin Fields as Mahomes’ Rehab Backup Quarterback

The Kansas City Chiefs secure Justin Fields as a new backup for Patrick Mahomes amid his ACL recovery. The trade from the New York Jets involves Kansas City sending a sixth-round pick in the 2027 draft while receiving a seventh-round pick in return. The Chiefs also take on $3 million of Fields' $10 million guaranteed salary for the season. With Mahomes sidelined for much of the offseason, Fields steps in as the top quarterback for the program. Last season, Fields, who signed a two-year, $40 million deal, struggled with the Jets, finishing 2-7 in nine starts, throwing for 1,259 yards, seven touchdowns, and one interception. He added 383 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns. The Jets’ acquisition of Geno Smith signals their plans to move on from Fields, who holds a career record of 16-37 as a starter with an 84.7 passer rating.
