The Indianapolis Colts place the transition tag on quarterback Daniel Jones ahead of the deadline, a rare move in the NFL. Wide receiver Alec Pierce becomes an unrestricted free agent as a result. The transition tag costs the Colts $37.833 million if Jones signs the one-year tender, which is fully guaranteed. In contrast, the franchise tag would have cost $43.895 million.
Key differences emerge: if Jones signs with another team, the Colts can match the offer but receive no compensation if they decline.
