Alex Newhook delivers another Game 7 heroics, scoring the overtime winner to propel the Montreal Canadiens past the Buffalo Sabres 3-2.
This victory not only secures Montreal’s spot in the Eastern Conference finals but also highlights Newhook’s clutch performances this postseason.
Newhook, who previously netted the decisive goal in a Game 7 against Tampa Bay, struck again 11:22 into overtime with a shot that sailed past goalie Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. He also broke a 1-1 tie earlier in the third period. Phillip Danault and Zack Bolduc added to the scoreline for the Canadiens, while Jakub Dobes made 37 saves. Rasmus Dahlin forced the extra period by tying the game for Buffalo, with Jordan Greenway also scoring. Luukkonen recorded 22 saves in defeat.
This marks Montreal's first trip to the NHL semifinal since the 2021 playoffs. They now prepare to face the Carolina Hurricanes, who are coming off a historic 11-day break. Newhook expressed excitement about the upcoming challenge, emphasizing the team's confidence and unity.
Buffalo’s season concludes after a remarkable turnaround, ending a 14-year playoff drought and capturing their first Atlantic Division title. The future looks bright for the young Sabres, despite their Game 7 struggles.
