A signed 1979 O-Pee-Chee Wayne Gretzky rookie card has shattered records, selling for an astounding $540,000 in Fanatics Collect's May Premier Auction. This marks the highest price ever for an autographed hockey card.
Gretzky's O-Pee-Chee rookie cards are notorious for fetching massive amounts, with four graded 10s selling for $720,000, $1.2 million, $1.29 million, and even $3.75 million since late 2020, but none were signed. Kevin Lenane, vice president of Fanatics Collect, emphasizes the rarity of this particular card, highlighting Gretzky's unparalleled legacy in the sport. "He had more career assists than anyone else had points," Lenane states.
The auction also saw Josh Allen's exclusive 1-of-1 2025 Topps Chrome Honors MVP card sell for $1.35 million, breaking the previous record for a card of the Bills quarterback. Lenane notes the card's unique features, describing it as "truly a collector's card."
Additionally, an autographed LeBron James superfractor from the same auction sold for $1.26 million, marking the 27th card of James to exceed the million-dollar mark. This auction reflects a booming market for high-value sports memorabilia.
