Roberto De Zerbi issues a half-hearted apology to Tottenham fans following his defense of Mason Greenwood. As the new Spurs manager, De Zerbi replaces Igor Tudor on a five-year contract, with the club precariously sitting just one point above the relegation zone. His comments defending Greenwood upon his signing with Marseille have drawn ire from a segment of Spurs supporters.
Greenwood faced serious charges in 2022, including attempted rape and assault, which were dropped in February 2023. De Zerbi labeled Greenwood a “good guy” who had “paid a heavy price,” implying he was the victim of the allegations. In his statement, he expressed regret for any offense caused, stating, “I’m sorry if this offended anyone’s feelings,” without fully acknowledging the gravity of his earlier comments.
Ahead of Tottenham’s crucial match against Sunderland, De Zerbi emphasizes the need for focus and courage. He stresses the importance of taking it one game at a time, dismissing distractions from the upcoming schedule. De Zerbi remains committed, declaring he will not resign even if the team faces relegation, affirming, “I signed five years of contract because for me it is a big challenge.”
