The RS Ireland Traveller Series kicked off with a record turnout of 53 boats at Carrickfergus Sailing Club last weekend. Here’s why this event marks a significant moment for sailing in Ireland.
The fleet, featuring RS Aero, RS Feva, RS200, and RS400 classes, faced challenging conditions with gusty winds exceeding 20 knots and icy rain showers. Race Officer Sheela Lewis expertly navigated the tricky weather, allowing the races to proceed with minimal delays.
In the RS Feva class, Ellen Nolan and Niamh Coman dominated with wins in the first and third races, while Leo West-Hurst and Ben McCaldin took race two. The RS Aero class saw multiple winners, including Daragh Sherridan, Sophie Crosbie, and Noel Buttler. Peter Kennedy and Stephen Kane triumphed in the RS400s, although issues forced some teams to retire.
Frank O'Rourke and his son Kevin ruled the RS200s, securing three straight victories. Sunday brought unexpected light winds, leading to an abandoned race as conditions shifted abruptly. The Ridout sisters emerged as new contenders, clinching two wins, while Jakob Ozarek and Amy Stocking also found success.
Despite fierce competition and tough conditions, the camaraderie and spirit of the event shone brightly, making it a memorable weekend for all involved.
