Ardie Savea plans to leave the All Blacks, informing New Zealand Rugby of his decision last November. A recent report counters claims that he led a player revolt resulting in Scott Robertson’s dismissal as head coach. Earlier this year, NZR shocked the rugby community by announcing Robertson's exit after a review of the 2025 international season.

Reports suggested Savea was “seriously unhappy” and issued an ultimatum: him or Robertson. However, the New Zealand Herald clarifies that Savea’s motivations stem from family concerns, not discontent with coaching. Savea expressed to NZ Rugby chair David Kirk during the Grand Slam tour that he wanted out of his final two contract years due to the toll of constant travel on his family life. He felt he was missing crucial time with his wife, Saskia Savea, and their three children.

Despite being on a lucrative contract exceeding $1 million annually, NZR declined an early termination. Kirk emphasized Savea's value to the union and their willingness to support him through the remaining contract. Both Kirk and then-coach Robertson were unaware of Savea’s intentions until days later. Savea’s decision does not stem from an ultimatum regarding Robertson, as confirmed by more than 20 sources.
