Leicester Fainga’anuku embraces his new role as a hybrid player for the Crusaders, showcasing his versatility in recent matches. This unconventional position could redefine player dynamics in Super Rugby Pacific.
Fainga’anuku, typically a wing or center, has stepped into the openside flank, starting with the Crusaders' 35-20 victory over the Waratahs, where he scored a try. His performance drew attention as it marked the first time he played among the forwards in New Zealand, although he had brief stints in similar roles during his time with Toulon from 2023 to 2025.
Despite a tough 38-31 loss to the Hurricanes, Fainga’anuku continued to impress, scoring again and solidifying his place in the lineup. He expresses his willingness to adapt, stating, “I’ll play anywhere really, I don’t mind.”
Crusaders forwards coach Dan Perrin praises Fainga’anuku's ability to learn quickly and contribute significantly to both attack and defense. The trend of hybrid players is gaining traction in rugby, with players like Andre Esterhuizen and Ben Earl also excelling in multiple positions. Perrin reassures that Fainga’anuku is under no pressure to specialize, highlighting his commitment to the team's needs.
