Phindile Baleni, the Chancellor of the National Orders, announced that Erasmus is among 40 individuals being honoured for their contributions to democracy and societal improvement. The Order of Ikhamanga recognizes excellence in arts, culture, literature, music, journalism, and sport.
Erasmus’s leadership has been instrumental in leading the Springboks to back-to-back Rugby World Cup victories in 2019 and 2023, enhancing social cohesion and elevating South Africa’s status on the global stage. Baleni emphasized that Erasmus’s achievements on the rugby field transcend sports, contributing to the nation’s pride and unity.
In 2023, Springboks captain Siya Kolisi also received the National Order of Ikhamanga, highlighting the ongoing recognition of rugby's role in South Africa's cultural tapestry.
