Asenathi Ntlabakanye, the Springboks prop, faces an 18-month ban for a doping violation, jeopardizing his participation in the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

This suspension, resulting from an adverse analytical finding for Anastrozole during a test in May 2025, has significant implications for South African rugby.

Ntlabakanye self-declared the use of an anabolic steroid, DHEA, leading to formal charges in September 2025. The independent panel's ruling means he will be sidelined starting May 13, 2026, with his ban concluding just after the World Cup final on November 13. The South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) classified Anastrozole as a "specified substance," which typically does not require a mandatory suspension, yet the Tribunal decided on this lengthy penalty.

The Lions Rugby Company confirmed their receipt of the sanction and stated they will support Ntlabakanye through the appeal process, which SAIDS, World Rugby, and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) can initiate within 21 days.

Ntlabakanye's ban raises questions about doping oversight in South African rugby, especially following a reported decrease in testing since their World Cup victories. All of Ntlabakanye's competitive results since the sample collection date are now disqualified.
