Schalk Burger insists that the Stormers must stop utilizing Damian Willemse on the wing, calling it a waste of his talents. This comes as the Stormers face injury challenges, forcing head coach John Dobson to position Willemse on the right wing for three consecutive matches.
Willemse’s wing debut against Edinburgh was a tactical choice, aimed at countering the Scottish side’s aerial strategy, but Burger argues this limits his impact. “We need to get Damian Willemse either taking charge at 15 or playing at 12,” Burger states on the Verdict podcast, emphasizing that the Springbok should be more involved in the game.
In the Stormers’ recent 24-33 loss to Connacht, concerns over player positioning were highlighted. Dobson admitted that Willemse cannot continue in this role, and assistant coach Dawie Snyman confirmed they are reconsidering their strategy ahead of the upcoming clash with URC leaders, Glasgow Warriors.
Burger also pointed to a critical mistake by full-back Warrick Gelant that contributed to the defeat. Despite moments of brilliance from players like Evan Roos and Sacha, the Stormers' failure to adapt to conditions and maintain composure ultimately cost them the match. The Stormers must now reassess their selections to harness their top players effectively.
