Les Kiss will play a pivotal role in Wallabies selection matters before taking over as head coach later this year. Joe Schmidt, currently leading the team, confirms that Kiss will influence decisions ahead of the Nations Championship, where Australia hosts Ireland, France, and Italy in July.
Schmidt emphasizes a collaborative approach, stating, "I’ll definitely involve Les in anything selection-wise." This partnership stems from their previous experience together on the Ireland coaching staff from 2013 to 2019. Kiss will observe the Wallabies' preparation in Brisbane and Perth before Schmidt's departure.
A key focus is on Reds fly-half Tom Lynagh, who has struggled with injuries this season. Despite limited game time, Schmidt considers him for selection, stressing the importance of playing within Australia to maintain eligibility for the national team. “He could get another couple of years under his belt,” Schmidt notes.
Additionally, Schmidt has maintained contact with Jordan Petaia, who is performing well in France after his stint in the NFL. He also discusses experienced fly-halves James O’Connor and Bernard Foley, both off contract and potentially returning to Super Rugby.
