Silverstone Returns to WEC Calendar in 2027
Additionally, the World Endurance Championship (WEC) is set to witness an exciting revival. Silverstone will host a six-hour race for the first time in eight years on April 25, 2027. This announcement comes just ahead of the prestigious Le Mans 24 Hours event, signaling a thrilling addition to the championship's schedule.
Moreover, the iconic British track will serve as the third round of the 2027 WEC season. It will slot seamlessly between two other European races at Imola and Spa. With this development, fans can anticipate a packed and competitive calendar in the upcoming season.
WEC's Expanding Calendar and Global Reach
Furthermore, the 2027 WEC season will kick off in Qatar on March 27. This year’s Losail race was postponed due to geopolitical factors in the Middle East. However, the championship aims for a full schedule, featuring five races in just four months in the first half of the season.
In addition, the season will progress to the Americas and Asia after concluding the European leg. Events in Sao Paulo on July 11 and Austin in September are already on the calendar. The Fuji 6 Hours in Japan will take place on September 26, while Bahrain will close the season with an eight-hour race on November 6.
Growing Popularity and Historic Significance
Notably, the return of Silverstone is indicative of the growing appeal of the WEC. Frederic Lequien, CEO of FIA WEC, expressed confidence in the timing of this expansion. He highlighted Silverstone's rich racing history and its ability to attract large crowds as key factors in this decision.
Additionally, Silverstone has been a part of the WEC since its rebirth in the 2010s. However, it fell off the calendar due to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent structural changes. The WEC has been cautious in its expansion plans, aiming for sustainability rather than rapid growth.
In summary: Silverstone's return to the WEC calendar marks an exciting chapter for endurance racing. Fans can look forward to a thrilling 2027 season with nine races across five global regions. To stay on top of all things WEC, follow Sports-Podcasts.com on YouTube.
