Twenty K1 dinghy sailors gather at Carsington Sailing Club for the thrilling Northern Trophy, showcasing the class's versatility amid challenging conditions. Here’s why this event highlights the resilience and camaraderie within the sailing community.
The competition kicks off with a training session led by expert Simon Hawkes, setting an inclusive tone for the weekend. Saturday delivers gusty winds peaking at 30 knots, allowing only one race, expertly claimed by Simon Hawkes, followed by Richard Sims and Andrew Wilson. The day wraps up with a lively class dinner at the clubhouse.
Sunday greets sailors with sunshine, but Carsington Water quickly shifts to its unpredictable nature. Winds fluctuate between 10 and over 30 knots, accompanied by a mix of sun, rain, and even hail. The race team successfully conducts three races, with Simon Hawkes securing overall victory and the Northern Trophy, while Andrew Wilson finishes second and Richard Sims takes third. In the Beat Your Predicted Place (BYPP) competition, Julian Leggitt shines, claiming first place, followed by Chris Cooney and Chris Swallow.
Special recognition goes to Alf Hawkesworth for his significant contributions to the sport, recently honored by the Royal Yachting Association. The event reinforces the K1’s appeal, blending skill with a supportive community spirit.
